“For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34
Some of the familiar verses in the Bible have a way of prompting us to skim right over them and then some days they hit you and I where it hurts. That was yesterday for me as one of our pastors tweeted the verse above. My tendency when I first read it was, “Yeah yeah. I know this one.” Then I stopped and noticed something. Sometimes I am too casual with my words.
The saying goes, “actions speak louder than words”. I do believe that is true. We have to put value to our words by following through with action. However, on the flip side, we can not just do things that we feel override our words. I may read my Bible and pray (action) but if I am constantly talking about worry or fear, then my words are a billboard for the true condition of my heart. Wisdom and convictions must take root in our hearts so that the overflow….the spillage, as I say…..are words of worship. Worship doesn’t come just when we know what God is up to. He is never as concerned about telling us WHAT He is doing. He is more concerned about revealing WHO He is.
If we love Jesus, we can’t keep talking theological principles. We must experience Him….really experience Him. That way words have eternal meaning and reveal authentic hearts. Then we live out those words of worship in our action.
Things like nutrition, exercise, parenting, friendships, preparing for this crazy world and loving people are all great things. But, if we talk more about those things than we do about the God who is the giver of knowledge, faith, passion, and compassion, we miss our influence. We simply end up with healthy, friendly preppers who care about people.
We need to be Christ followers that point others to Jesus with our words and our actions.
